Windermere School

Windermere School

One conquers, who conquers oneself

Welcome to Windermere School in the heart of the Lake District National Park. Established in 1863, we are a boarding and day school for boys and girls from age 2 to 18. With access to a spectacular greater classroom, we can really live our school motto:

Vincit qui se Vincit. One conquers, who conquers oneself.

We believe Windermere School is unique and very special, with the right balance of academic emphasis, physical well-being and a commitment to serving society. We equip our students with the skills, values and qualifications that provide an enduring foundation for the future. We aspire to excellence in all things, and for our students to combine confidence and compassion. As a Round Square and IB World school we subscribe to a truly international curriculum. By the time our students leave Windermere School, we want them to know that with determination, they can overcome adversity and remain true to their purpose; they can be of value to society and help make the world a better place.

Windermere School was originally established as St. Anne's School in 1863 at the seaside town of St. Anne near Lytham in Lancashire. In 1924 the school moved to its beautiful premises on the shores of Windermere and became known as St. Anne's Windermere, followed by becoming Windermere St. Anne's School in 1999.  In 2010 the school changed its name to Windermere School to reflect its long standing association with the Lake District location which is recognised globally. To honour nearly 150 years of tradition, alumni continue to be known throughout the world as "Stannites".

Our School

Windermere School offers a challenging and enriching educational environment starting with Pre-Prep through to the Preparatory School, Senior School and Sixth Form. In addition, we offer an International Summer School with EAL language courses and adventure activities each summer. With an emphasis on achieving personal excellence through self awareness and challenge, our curriculum combines academic study with outdoor education and service to the local and international community at every level.

The location is unrivalled in beauty - yet we are only ninety minutes from two international airports. The student body is predominantly British, with a growing number of international students experiencing what we have to offer.  There is an even mix of boys and girls. The majority of pupils were educated at the school from Pre-Prep to Sixth Form, and we have excellent acceptance results for university places. As well as impressive degrees and interesting careers, our Leavers share a common sense of purpose  -  to contribute. Whether this is on a personal level through friends and families, or a wider level through international service, we are proud that the values we instill can make a difference.

Visits

We welcome visitors to Windermere School at anytime - meet our current students, tour the magnificent grounds including our lakeside watersports centre, Hodge Howe, and drop in on a lesson to see what we have to offer.  Teachers and key members of staff will be available to answer your questions, and guests are encouraged to join us for lunch in our Dining Hall overlooking the lake and fells.

Tours and Visits anytime

We welcome visits year round for families and students to experience the school on a typical day. With prior notice we can arrange lunch with a particular year group or meetings with members of staff in subject areas of interest ( e.g. Sports coaches, Heads of Faculty, Learning Support or Special Educational Needs staff). Please contact admissions@windermereschool.co.uk to arrange an appointment.

Boarding Taster Days

We accept boys and girls as boarders from ages 8 to 18 (Years 3 to 13). The best way to experience the benefits of boarding are to try it our for a night or two. Candidates are paired with a student their own age to attend lessons with and share a room. All Boarding Taster students join in the daily activities, lessons and meal times to become familiar with the routine.
