Lucton School

An outstanding educational opportunity...

About Lucton School
At Lucton we aim to bring the best out of every individual, recognising their unique gifts, talents and abilities. We aim to provide a secure, happy environment in which pupils can flourish academically, socially, intellectually and physically.

A small school has many advantages in the vital area of pastoral care. All pupils at Lucton know each other well and pupil-teacher links are readily maintained on a friendly and relatively informal basis. Academic and social progress are regularly monitored, with Form Tutors taking an active role in supporting their tutees. There is a well-publicised code of conduct which acts as a guide to the personal standards expected and this emphasises good manners, tolerance and respect for others at all times. Form Tutors provide a daily point of staff contact for all pupils and our merit system gives immediate reward for constructive and thoughtful contributions to school life.

At Lucton, we believe in the recognition of personal achievement and high standards in all work and extra-curricular activities and the positive reinforcement of good behaviour through praise. We place considerable stress on self-discipline and the development of self-confidence and responsibility by individuals as they gain seniority. Teamwork and friendly competition are encouraged through a house system, while senior pupils are given privileges and responsibilities as prefects.

An outstanding educational opportunity
Lucton is proud to offer children from 6 months the best possible start in the Nursery. They progress through early years to the prep school, then to Senior School and Sixth Form. Throughout the time they are with us, pupils benefit from small classes and excellent teaching in a warm, homely environment, where they feel accepted, valued and secure. This is borne out by the students’ excellent results and the confidence with which they take their next steps into life beyond Lucton.

Founded in 1708, Lucton is situated in the beautiful countryside of North Herefordshire, with glorious views over to the Brecons and Black Mountains.

Our campus is rural but within easy reach of our local towns, Leominster, Ludlow and Hereford. School buses are available to transport day pupils from all corners of Herefordshire, as well as the nearer parts of Shropshire, Worcestershire and Powys. We are able to meet international flights at Birmingham and London airports.

School Buildings
The original school occupied the beautiful Queen Anne building pictured here. Major extensions were added in the 19th and 20th centuries and further ambitious developments will take place over the next 5 years to provide additional sporting, academic and boarding accommodation.

Sporting Facilities
Pupils enjoy the use of our heated indoor Swimming Pool, opened in our Tercentenary Year by His Highness Prince Edward, Duke of Wessex. Our sports fields are within the school grounds and our Sports Hall has recently undergone a major refurbishment, providing an excellent environment for many sports.

Sport
Sport plays a major part in the lives of Lucton pupils. Cricket, cross-country, netball, hockey, tennis, athletics, basketball, badminton, lacrosse, fencing – in fact, we like to think that, if pupils play it, we’ll provide it! Rugby is a particularly popular choice for our boys, with regular competitive fixtures and occasional overseas tours.

Equestrian
Lucton is proud of its new equestrian centre. Set in 14 acres, immediately opposite the school, the centre offers stabling for 14 horses, riding lessons and support for those who want to ride purely for pleasure as well as those who want to hone their competition skills. We hold our own inter-schools showjumping competition every year.

Other activities
CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme are popular choices with weekly meetings, training camps and expeditions. Other activities include gardening, cookery, speech & drama, science club, rambling, fencing, chess, ICT, film club, chess, debating – the list goes on …. musicCreative Arts

School productions, local competitive festivals and the LAMDA examinations, as well as all aspects of speech, drama and dance, provide students at all stages with many opportunities to develop their confidence. The Music Department combines a strong choral tradition with modern and traditional instrument tuition and there are many opportunities to perform in school concerts and competitions.

Art students may choose textiles, art & design or graphic design whilst the CDT department offers the chance to design and construct some truly amazing artefacts and furniture.

Educational Trips
Opportunities abound and range from local farms to see lambing for the little ones, to Florence & Rome for senior students. In between, there are trips relating to all curriculum subjects as well as those for fun, adventure, sport and culture.

Boarding
Boarding is central to life at Lucton. Live-in houseparents have their own children at the school and there is a very real family atmosphere within the boarding community. There are common rooms for relaxing, a newly- refurbished café to prepare simple snacks, access to the swimming pool and sports facilities as well as action-packed weekends!

School grounds
We have 55 acres of well-maintained grounds with stunning views towards the Welsh mountains. All our pitches and courts are part of the school campus, as is the equestrian centre. We have woods which are home to our Forest School and form part of our cross-country competition course, an orchard which produces masses of apples. We have recently planted more trees including a Jubilee Oak.

Individual Visits
You are also welcome to visit us at other times for a tour of the School and a meeting with the Headmistress.

If you would like to arrange a visit please contact Lucton's Registrar, Lesley Cowie.
